Understanding the Spirit of Spring Energy

The changing of seasons brings about an adaptation process that our body and psyche must undergo in accordance with the Tao, or the Way of life, whether we are “ready or not”.  According to the universal law of life change is inevitable, imminent, and unavoidable. Things are always changing, transforming and transmuting from one stage to the next.

The change of seasons is always a wonderful opportunity to watch the unfolding of time outside; dramatic change can happen overnight.

What is the essence of spring energy and why does it matter?  Spring energy can be defined by many characteristics, which we will dig into, but why it matters is just as important as what it is, what it looks and feels like.

Here’s why understanding the nature of seasonal energy is significant; it’s a blueprint for what might be happening as we have subtle changes in our physical body and the activity of the mind. We can know what to expect and anticipate the best way to behave for health and vitality.

It also gives context and depth of understanding for why things are the way they are at any given moment in time. It’s a lot like astrology; a snapshot of how universal and heavenly energies impact earth and its inhabitants. These influences, though invisible, have remarkable impact on the consciousness of individuals and the collective consciousness.

Understanding the energy of the season can help you understand your own psycho-emotional landscape, as well as your physical responsiveness as they may vary depending upon the time of year, or even the time of day.  Understanding these tendencies and proclivities can teach you how to have more flow and less resistance in your life. Would you rather swim upstream or go with the current?

Spring energy is somewhat impatient.  Whether you are a human, a squirrel or a tulip magnolia, you are definitely feeling a sense of urgency to get the the spring party started.  The mantra of spring might as well be “I’m so ready for….”

The unfolding of spring happens in fits and starts. One day it’s blowing snow, and the next is warm, radiant sunshine.

Impatience, frustration, feeling under pressure, emotional ups and downs, and anger rule the season of spring. The continuous shifting of weather outside can create shifting on the inside as well.  Hallmarked by a sudden onset of symptoms, health can turn on a dime.

Just as wind moves and stirs things up outside, inside the body there can be wind too: moving aches and pains, twitches and tremors, headaches and migraines that “spring” out of nowhere. Sneezing and itching, are also tell-tale signs of an outside wind invading the body.

Spring season rules the tendons and ligaments, so take time to stretch and promote elasticity as well as strength.

Spring energy is forward looking; this is a time to make your plans and plant seeds for the late summer harvest. The sensory organ associated with spring are the eyes: you are at an advantage this time of year with envisioning for yourself and your future.

This vision will have the best odds of fruition if you also make a plan. Spring energy demands a tangible plan be put into place, otherwise you will find yourself looking back at some dreamy ideas rather than actualized goals.
